How current are the support materials under various course pages?

Traditionally the updating process is started concurrently with the handout modifications. However, because of the complex process involved in development of e-learning material of this nature, at times certain components of the course material may require substantial time to be updated ad therefore this time lag may be visible in certain places as to be anywhere between one to two semesters.

Whom do I contact if I find a discrepancy in either a course handout or course materials?

In case of any such discrepancy, you are advised to bring it to the kind attention of Prof. G. Sundar, Dean, Distance Learning Programmes Division.

Evaluation

If I have any doubts regarding the course how do I get them clarified?

The best way for a student to clarify doubts is to attend the Live lectures. Offline Discussion comes to the rescue of the students in case they could not attend the live session.  Any student can post his/her doubt in the Discussion room which can be replied or commented by the Instructor/Student so that the student can understand the concept in depth and get his doubt cleared.  The other way of doing it would be to send mails to the specified Course Instructors  E-mail address.

How is my understanding of the various courses evaluated?

Most of the courses have evaluation components like Quiz, Test, Project, Seminar to test and identify the knowledge of the student in the specific course.  This is also used to identify the domain where the student is unable to cope up and provide additional course materials and references in the case.  These evaluation schemes play a major part in enriching and nourishing students knowledge in the course.  The evaluation components are corrected by its respective instructors and relevant feedback is sent back to the students. As of now, no online examination is conducted through the BITS-VU portal.

What is the evaluation system followed by BITS?

The Institute follows continuous system of internal evaluation and letter grades A, B, C, D, E carrying grade points 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 respectively are awarded for all courses other than Dissertation / Thesis-Seminar for which only non-letter grades namely EXCELLENT, GOOD, FAIR, POOR are awarded. If a student does not offer adequate opportunity for evaluation in a course, reports such as NC (Not cleared) may be awarded.

How is the grading done for the various courses I am registered to?

The final grading in a course is done by tabulating in descending order (equivalently a histogram) the total marks of all students in a particular course. The performance of the course will be analysed in terms of average, highest and lowest marks and dividing lines between various clusters. Gaps between clusters and the nature of clusters will guide drawing the dividing lines between various grades. In a normal class of large size, the C-band will usually include the average mark. This is not a hard and fast rule and exceptions may arise in cases of small classes or a skewed histogram etc.

How is the CGPA computed?

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on a 10 Scale basis is used to describe the overall performance of a student in all courses for which LETTER GRADES are awarded.

           U1G1+U2G2+U3G3+...............+UnGn
CGPA = ---------------------------------------
         U1+U2+U3+.........+Un

Where U1, U2, U3, .. Un denote units associated with the courses taken by the student and G1, G2,G3,...Gn denote grade points of the letter grades awarded in the respective courses. Non-Letter grades do not go into computation of CGPA.

Do I get a mark sheet at the end of each semester?

Subject to fulfilling the Academic Regulations of the Institute, the student will be issued at the end of each semester a grade sheet and at the end of the programme a Transcript and Provisional Certificate followed by the Final Degree Certificate.
